MSM
Products What is MSM? MSM Stands for Methyl Sulfonyl Methane, organic sulfur. Sulfur, the third largest substance in the body, IS the forgotten nutrient! The body uses sulfur to continually create new healthy cells to replace old ones. Without it, the body will produce weak dysfunctional cells. Sulfur deficiencies are associated with slow wound healing, brittle nails and hair, gastrointestinal problems, inflammatory problems, scar tissue, lung dysfunction, and immune dysfunction. As sulfur is lost in food processing, deficiencies are very common today. How to use MSM: MSM is available in capsules or as a powder. The daily dose may range from 2 to 20 grams, depending on your diet, body weight, state of health, etc. The precise dose is not really that critical as it is considered a food. For the first week or two larger doses may be needed to compensate for a deficiency. Some forms of minerals, particularly inorganic minerals, are poorly absorbed. The organic sulfur in MSM is extremely well absorbed. Administered orally, a portion of MSM binds to the mucosal membrane receptor sites, while the rest is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. Cellular membrane permeability allows MSM to readily penetrate cell membranes, as well as subcellular fractions, such as the mitochondrial, lysosomal and nuclear portions. Within 24 hours of administration, the sulfur derived from MSM can be found in the liver, kidney and blood. "Therapeutic" Use of MSM For those who have arthritis (or similar degenerative condition), asthma, digestive disorders (including parasites), or some other "serious" health problem, it is best to "detox" first using higher levels of MSM to obtain quickest results. Everyone is different, and different tissues in the body respond at different rates. Lungs, considered one of the vital organs of the body, respond more quickly than arthritic joints. You could notice a difference in your lungs in as little as 3 days, while other conditions such as arthritis will probably take 2-3 weeks to see improvement. The longer it is used, the better and quicker the results. The higher the amount used, the quicker the results. First Week: "Detox" Twice a day (first thing in the morning and again in the late afternoon), add one package of Alacer's Emergen-C or similar product, to the water. This product provides highly soluble mineral ascorbates which are needed to heal and repair tissues. Especially important are potassium, zinc, manganese, and calcium ascorbate (Vitamin C). It provides 25 different electrolytes in all plus C and B vitamins. Water is very important to help flush toxins out of the body. More water, the faster the results, and the fewer side effects will be experienced from the detoxification process. Some individuals find that MSM gives them extra energy so in order to avoid sleep difficulties, avoid taking any MSM after 6 p.m. Possible side effects: One may experience headaches and fatigue for the first few days due to the detoxification process. If this occurs, drink more water. Do not be alarmed as this is a natural part of the healing process. Second Week: Take 10-20 grams MSM daily. Add 1/2 teaspoon MSM per 12 ounces of water. Drink at least four 12 ounce glasses of MSM water, spread throughout the day before 6 p.m. This is a total of 8 grams MSM. Additional MSM can be supplemented through capsules. Twice daily, add one package Emergen-C to the water. Therapeutic Maintenance Take 2-10 grams MSM daily. To simplify things, (and so the entire household can benefit from the restored sulfur diet), add MSM powder directly into a distilled water dispenser. When it is time to switch jugs, drain several cups of water into a pitcher and dump in the desired amount of MSM. Stir until dissolved. It will take a few minutes. Dump this mixture into the new jug before placing it into the dispenser. 1 teaspoon = 4 grams MSM How to Make "Maintenance" MSM Water Add 1/2 teaspoons MSM for every 12 ounces of water. One should drink 64 ounces of water per day. This is about 10 grams MSM. At this level, it is tasteless and it's the most natural way to supplement. Extra capsules will not be needed. In the morning, add one package Emergen-C to the water. Although MSM is highly water soluble and it mixes quickly at room temperature water in a glass with a spoon, it takes a little longer with cold water. One may use a personal handheld mixer to speed things up. NOTE: Some authorities believe that sulfur is more effective when taken with Vitamin C, B Complex vitamins, especially B-1, B-5 and biotin, and electrolytes. Be sure drink adequate amounts of water daily Safer Than Salt! MSM is rated as one of the least toxic substances in biology, similar to water. If one takes more MSM than needed, it simply passes through the body and is excreted in the urine. The excess MSM won't harm anyone. MSM has been widely tested as a food ingredient without any reports of allergic reactions. An unpublished Oregon Health Sciences University study of the long-term toxicity of MSM over a period of six months indicated no toxic effects. More than 12,000 patients have been treated at the Oregon Health Sciences University with MSM at levels above two grams daily with no serious toxicity. (Dr. Stanley Jacob of the Oregon Health Sciences University) Dr. Jacob reports he personally takes 30 grams MSM per day, and has done so for 20 years. He reports he has not had a cold or flu since he began this regimen, which had previously experienced once or twice every year. We take the
